The team began playing in 2004 and used the Great Lakes Sports City Superior Arena in Fraser, Michigan as their home ice. During their first year of operation, the Mechanics were actually the only professional hockey team playing in Detroit due to the NHL lockout at the time. The Mechanics actually signed three Detroit Red Wings players at the time.
